Your Guide to Nusa Lembongan in Bali, Indonesia
Nusa Lembongan
Beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters, mesmerizing sunsets, and perfect surf breaks all await travellers in Nusa Lembongan. Quickly becoming one of the most popular destinations in Bali, the island paradise is the ideal spot for those looking for a relaxing holiday in magnificent scenery. Here’s everything to know if you’re planning a trip there.
What to Know about Nusa Lembongan
Nusa Lembongan spans approximately eight square kilometres and is part of a trio of neighbouring islands, alongside the larger Nusa Penida and the smaller Nusa Ceningan. These islands are separated from Bali by the Badung Strait. Compared to the bustling pace of South Bali, Nusa Lembongan may feel refreshingly tranquil to some visitors.
The island boasts numerous excellent spots for diving and snorkelling, showcasing abundant marine life and thriving coral reefs. While surfing spots can be popular and lively, the waves are consistently good. Away from the main hubs, several secluded white sand beaches offer serene escapes with minimal crowds.
Nusa Lembongan is also famous for its flourishing seaweed farming industry, providing visitors with a fascinating opportunity to delve into local culture and practices.
Climate-wise, Nusa Lembongan mirrors its neighbouring Bali, but it tends to be noticeably drier, especially from May to September. The peak of the rainy season in January and February is typically the time to steer clear.
In terms of culture, the local Lembonganese practice Hinduism, much like their counterparts on Bali’s mainland. Visitors will find little to no difference in cultural practices.
Getting to and Around Nusa Lembongan
Using one of the many harbours, you can easily get from Bali or Nusa Penida to Nusa Lembongan by boat. Sanur Beach has the most departures and you can find boats there going to Nusa Lembongan at almost all hours of the day. The journey typically takes half an hour and you can buy return tickets as well.
If you’re in the Gili Islands or Lombok, you’ll also be able to charter a boat to take you to Nusa Lembongan. However, keep in mind that, given good weather conditions, the journey usually lasts more than 1.5 hours.
Once there, you’ll be able to explore Nusa Lembongan in a variety of ways.
Many tourists opt to rent bikes or motorbikes, but you can also cover a lot of ground on foot. In fact, there are many coastal paths linking the different restaurants and hotels while taking in the wonderful views of Bali. What’s more, if you’re up for a longer walk and a bigger adventure, know that you can cross into Nusa Ceningan by foot by crossing a scenic suspension bridge.
If you choose a motorbike or scooter, know that there are many rentals along the small island where you can find a ride. Even though the ride might be short, make sure you wear a helmet and stay safe.
If you want to visit some other beautiful attractions that are close by, you will also be able to rent a boat. There are many tour operators offering boat rides to and from Jungut Batu or Mushroom Bay.

Explore the Beaches
Even though the islands are small, both Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan offer many natural (and some man-made) attractions. Here are some of our favourites that will ensure you have a memorable holiday.
Nusa Lembongan is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in all of Indonesia. First off, there’s Paradise Beach, which offers a stunning vista of Mount Agung, complete with soft white sands and nestled mangrove trees. Situated at the end of Mangrove Beach in Jungutbatu Village, it’s a serene spot to unwind.
Mushroom Beach serves as the primary arrival point for boats in Nusa Lembongan. This pristine, serene stretch of white sand invites visitors to swim, snorkel, dive, surf, and indulge in beachside dining and traditional Lumbung accommodations.
Dream Beach, tucked away on the island’s south coast, is a secluded gem boasting powdery white sands. Accessible by heading southeast from the main accommodations and hotel area on the west coast towards Lembongan Village, then west towards the signposted track south to Dream Beach. However, be careful when swimming there because there are strong currents, especially at the eastern end.
Sandy Bay, also known as Sunset Beach, lies right next to Devil’s Tear. This small but spectacular beach features white sands and crashing waves, just north of Dream Beach and accessed via the same route.
During low tide, a dramatic cave emerges in the limestone cliff on the eastern side, but beware of rising tides that could cut off access to the beach. Sandy Bay is a laid-back spot that captures the essence of relaxation found throughout Bali.
Tamarind Beach, positioned between Playgrounds Surf Break and Mushroom Bay, offers picturesque views back towards Bali, with Mount Agung as a stunning backdrop.
Visit Mushroom Bay
Mushroom Bay truly stands out as a highlight of any visit to Nusa Lembongan. Even though it’s less popular than Dream Beach or Sandy Bay, it offers a delightful beach experience.
You can bask in the sun all day on its golden sands, taking refreshing dips in the crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean. For those seeking adventure, Mushroom Bay is the place to be. There are many snorkelling tours to help you explore the vibrant reefs below.
In addition to snorkelling, Mushroom Bay is famous for its variety of warungs, beach clubs, restaurants, and bars. It is the perfect spot for a relaxed island lunch.
Families will also appreciate Mushroom Bay’s kid-friendly atmosphere, especially the dedicated swimming area at the northern end of the beach, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience along the coastline.
Take a Day Trip to Nusa Penida
If you’re spending more than just a day on Nusa Lembongan, don’t miss the opportunity to venture over to Nusa Penida Island. A short 15-minute boat ride away, Nusa Penida beckons with its array of stunning beaches waiting to be explored.
Nusa Penida is truly cinematic with its dramatic 200-meter cliffs, which adventurous souls can even hike down for breathtaking views of Bali. It’s an experience that’s bound to find its way into your travel memories.
Once on Nusa Penida, you can easily navigate the island by car or motorbike, making it a convenient yet incredibly rewarding excursion from Nusa Lembongan.
Visit Nusa Ceningan
Nusa Ceningan, a small island nestled between Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan, spans just 3 square kilometres, making it a delightful destination for leisurely exploration. Visitors flock here for snorkelling, diving, and the breathtaking Blue Lagoon, as well as to witness traditional seaweed cultivation.
In recent years, Nusa Ceningan has undergone significant development to accommodate tourists’ needs. The island now boasts a variety of restaurants, villas, hotels, and vibrant hangout spots scattered across its prime locations.
Take the Lembongan Mangrove Boat Tour
Embark on a serene adventure through the mangrove forest on the northeast side of Nusa Lembongan for an unforgettable time. Whether by a small boat or stand-up paddleboard, you can glide along the tranquil river, soaking in the clear waters and peaceful surroundings.
For a comprehensive experience, consider booking a day tour that delves into the secrets of the mangrove forest and explores the pristine waters that encompass it. It’s a perfect way to unwind and connect with nature while enjoying the beauty and serenity of Nusa Lembongan’s coastal landscape.
Dive With Manta Rays
Explore Nusa Lembongan’s vibrant coral reefs up close on an extraordinary snorkelling tour. Dive into the crystal-clear waters of Manta Bay, Crystal Bay, and Toyapakeh Wall Penida. They are all must-visit spots, teeming with exotic marine life, including sea turtles and seahorses.
While snorkelling, you can also see a dazzling array of fish including pufferfish, Moray eels, clownfish, scorpionfish, lionfish, and Hawksbill turtles. At Manta Bay, marvel at the graceful manta rays swimming gracefully alongside you!
After a day immersed in the island’s aquatic wonders, you can unwind aboard a traditional gondola and soak in the tranquil ambience of the mangrove forest.
Just a 20-minute boat ride from Nusa Lembongan takes you to Manta Bay, where you can plunge into the water and witness these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. Remember to observe from a respectful distance and never disturb them.
See the Yellow Bridge
A true icon of the Nusa Islands is the Yellow Suspension Bridge, which connects Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan. This charming bridge is just wide enough for two motorbikes to pass each other. During sunset, the tide between the islands can get extremely low, sometimes even low enough for you to walk across from one side to the other.
